CANYON, Texas—The American Chemical Society Panhandle Plains local section has been selected as a finalist for a ChemLuminary Award for Outstanding Performance by a Local Section. Winners will be announced at the 254th American Chemical Society Nation Meeting Aug. 22 in Washington, D.C.

The ChemLuminary Awards recognizes local sections and other ACS organizations for their efforts and work in promoting chemistry and the chemical sciences. The local section activities include hosting bimonthly meetings that included a tour of the WTAMU Meat Lab, a job fair initiative, speaker events, an Earth Day celebration at the Discovery Center and a Family Science Night to celebrate National Chemistry Week.

WTAMU faculty members who serve on the 2017 local section executive committee include Dr. Catherine Clewett, Dr. Jason Yarbrough, Dr. Greg McGovern and Dr. Nick Flynn from the Department of Chemistry and Physics. Flynn, local section councilor, will present a poster representing the activities the local section participated in during the past year at the Fall National ACS meeting.
