Here are the notes:
2009-01-16: First homework assignment, due Monday, Jan 26:
Chapter 2 problems 1,2,3,6,12,17,18,31,32,37.
The first of these are pretty simple.
2009-01-19: Here is a Project PHYSNET module
that has a good alternate set of examples on the wave equation and
harmonic waves. It includes example problems with brief answers similar
to those above.
2009-01-21: Notes on harmonic waves, the
first part of the chapter in detail. These are 'article' form, good for
printing. I add a few things to the first sections of Ch. 2.
2009-02-09: Tales of two frenchmen:
Fermat's principle and the Fresnel equations.
These are both in "screen" form. The Fresnel equations will introduce
the effects of polarization on reflection and refraction.
2009-02-25: We went over some geometrical optics examples using the ideas of dioptric power and vergence.
Here is an article from the American Journal of Physics
from 1975: Vergence, vision, and geometric optics.
This is a formalism often used in optometry, and it is often useful
to see varying approaches to these topics.
